ABSTRACT

As the school year comes to an end, so, too, do our bi-weekly LSJTRG workshops. We begin planning our annual Educating for Change Curriculum Fair held in September. This year, our focus is “Defining Democracy,” a deliberate engagement with the principles that we see gradually being eroded in our increasingly privatized world. We chose this theme to “talk back to” the lack of democracy that has underlined many of the decisions around public education in St. Louis, Missouri. This pattern of privatization, occurring in St. Louis, is being carried out all over the country and the world. It is within this context that many of our teaching colleagues experience despair, apathy, and silencing. It is for and with these teachers that we organize the Educating for Change Fair every year.
