ABSTRACT

Many students have alienating or embarrassing experiences in physical education that deter them from developing confidence in their physical ability. Often these embarrassing or alienating moments in physical education arise from discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender expression and body shape/size. This chapter focuses on the experiences of students who were marginalized during physical education because of their sexual or gender identity, or the size and appearance of their body. Theoretically, the chapter explores how discourses about the body in physical education, many of which are taken for granted, contribute to particular forms of ableism, heterosexism and body discrimination within students’ experiences of schooling.
