This chapter considers the promotion of physical literacy in individuals with a disability, throughout their lifecourse. It explores the importance of physical literacy to these individuals while examining how it can be achieved within their unique environmental settings. International statements on the entitlement of those with a disability are included, as are definitions of disability and types of barriers these individuals may meet. A key focus of the chapter will be to identify best practice strategies that aim to foster the confidence, self-esteem and motivation of these individuals in physical activity contexts, thus nurturing the development of their physical literacy. The benefits of being physically literate for those with a disability are addressed and exemplified by two case studies. Chapter 4 lays the ground for this discussion in arguing that physical literacy is a universal concept that all can achieve.
