ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with employees’ commitments to macro-level foci, that is, organizational commitments. I will rst review commitment to the major macro-level foci that researchers have investigated over the years. These include commitments to the employing organization, to the profession/occupation and career, and to the union. Second, I will briey review commitments to lesser studied macro-level foci, such as client organizations and organizational subentities. While reviewing the relevant literature, particular attention will be given to the effects of these commitments on work outcomes. Next, I examine the similarities and differences across organizational commitments. In the section that follows, I propose and discuss a model of the mediating processes linking commitment to work behavior. Finally, avenues for future research on organizational commitments are proposed in the last section of the chapter.
