ABSTRACT

The construct of commitment has increasingly become of interest to organizations. While the construct has a long and voluminous history within the academic realm, business leaders’ recognition of the importance of human capital has focused their attention on the attitudes of people within their rms. In particular, The War for Talent, popularized by McKinsey & Company (Michaels, Handeld-Jones, & Axelrod, 2001), directed business leaders’ efforts toward the issue of how to “attract, motivate, and retain” those most critical to their rm’s success. Consequently, these leaders sought to build processes and characteristics in their organizations that would facilitate attracting, motivating, and retaining key talent.
