ABSTRACT

August 2, 2005, was a triumphant day for intelligent design (ID), the latest and most powerful challenge yet mounted to the standard model of evolution through natural selection derived from Charles Darwin and Alfred Russell Wallace. During a press conference, President Bush himself endorsed the teaching of ID in the public schools. “Both sides ought to be properly taught . . . so people can understand what the debate is about,” he said (Garofoli 2005).
