ABSTRACT
The introductory sections to this book explain how attitudes to national parks vary across continents and across time. The different approaches do not depend on objective judgement based on ecological criteria, but are informed by political and cultural viewpoints, with the desire to protect tracts of land from damaging exploitation arising from attitudes shaped over centuries by cultural, scientific and religious influences.
