ABSTRACT

The terms integrated and systems are distinct from one another in that integration is the way in which sustainability objectives are pursued, whereas systems is the way in which sustainability is studied. Viewing ski resorts from a systems perspective offers an alternative approach to investigating the essential requirements and outcomes for sustainable ski resorts in the context of whole systems, human and ecological subsystems, their state, changes in their state, and the linkages and interdependencies that exist between the systems. The Gibson principles recognise the integrative aspects of sustainability as they represent a set of interdependent requirements that extend beyond the conventional categories. The Gibson principles advocate that decision-making for sustainability makes a positive contribution to the well-being of biophysical and human systems, rather than traditional decision making for sustainability that advocates minimising negative impacts. Principle of inter-generational equity: Favor present options and actions that are most likely to preserve or enhance the opportunities, capabilities of future generations to live.
