ABSTRACT

Scientific interest in indoor air pollution started in earnest during the second half of the 1980s (Viegi et al 2004) mainly to investigate risk factors that may have been contributing to the rise in prevalence of diseases and conditions such as asthma, allergic rhinitis and eczema since the 1970s (Sly1999). Nowadays, these diseases have become increasingly common in industrialised countries (up to one individual in 3) and are being found in developing countries, resulting in a huge socio-economic burden at world level (O’Connell 2004).
