ABSTRACT

There is a perception among many Masters Athletes that recovery from exercise training is progressively impaired with age. A recent high-profile example of this belief is USA Olympic swimmer Dara Torres, who, despite qualifying for the individual 100m freestyle in addition to the 50m freestyle and the 4x100m freestyle and medley relays for the Beijing Olympic games, withdrew from the event as she felt that delayed recovery from multiple events at 41 years of age would impair her chances of succeeding in the 50m and the relays (Cuda, 2008).
