ABSTRACT

When I consider the short history of digital librarianship, I cannot help but reference this small piece of family folklore:

Several years ago, my father was piloting a carload of family members through northern Kentucky en route to a Cincinnati Reds baseball game. Crossing the apex of a large hill, all the passengers were unhappy to see a double line of motionless cars and trucks on the road ahead. Reacting quickly, perhaps instinctively, my father avoided the traffic jam by slowing down and turning onto a smaller side road. My uncle, alarmed at the sudden route change, exclaimed, “We’re going the wrong way!” To which my adventurous father replied, “True, but we’re making very good time!”
