ABSTRACT

Visitors to cities share their appreciation of characterful places and good places to eat with residents and city workers. In the places the authors of these chapters have examined it is becoming more and more difficult to distinguish between visitors and others. We asked the contributors to look at both how tourism was changing in their cities and at the new places off the beaten track, that visitors were getting to. Their conclusions suggest some broad similarities among this group of well known, well visited and multi-functional world tourism cities, discussed below. In this final chapter we would like to explore the strength of some of these similarities and the implications of the findings for tourism research and for urban studies more generally.
