ABSTRACT
Britain’s uplands have an important place in landscape history. While they have often been perceived as marginal to lowland settlement, they have been subject to changing land use and subsequently land cover, leading to today’s rich socio-cultural landscapes. Uplands are not untouched wildernesses, but cultural creations shaped by millennia of past human activity.
