ABSTRACT

Action research is a generic term, which covers many forms of actionorientated research. It indicates diversity in theory and practice among action researchers, so providing a wide choice for potential action researchers as to what approach might be appropriate for their research question. The outcomes of action research are both an action and research-based knowledge which contrast with traditional positivist science, which aims at creating knowledge only. Action research has applicability to unstructured or integrative issues. It has broad relevance to practitioners and can contribute to theory. This chapter explores the themes and challenges facing OM researchers as they attempt to learn from the applied activity that characterizes the practice of OM.
