ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on an important Austrian cultural quarter international flagship development, which, on closer examination, enables consideration to be given to a number of developmental perspectives. 1 At a policy level these include Austrian government cultural sector policy, practice and funding attitudes. The management and marketing of the MuseumsQuartier addresses the nature of the structures, organization, stakeholders, and legal relationships. These give rise to tensions between the individual autonomy of institutions and a state-imposed umbrella organization, the characteristics of creativity in comparison with the requirements for conformity, and the compatibility of facility and programming management. However, it is important to place these perspectives in a context of cultural quarter principles and practice derived from modelling largely undertaken in the United Kingdom.
