ABSTRACT

In 1993 a paper was published in the Sociology of Sport Journal stating that ‘music has received very little attention among sports scholars’.1 It is likely, though we have no proof, that a paper in a music journal has probably published the view that musicologists have ignored sports. But both claims are only partially true. Music has long been present in sport, while many musical works have been inspired by, or at least allude to, sporting matters. The chapters of this book confirm the nexus between the two cultural forms of sport and music. They are international in authorship and interdisciplinary in academic approach. Additionally, they span the imaginary spectrum between ‘high’ and ‘low’ cultures and between ancient and modern. To our knowledge, this is the first broad work of scholarship that brings sport and music together.
