Greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere as a result of human activities are termed anthropogenic (human created) greenhouse gas emissions. Although anthropogenic emissions from industry, agriculture, and deforestation remained relatively modest from the beginning of the Industrial Revolution (generally taken to be 1750) until the mid-twentieth century, they have since grown rapidly, increasing at an average rate of 2.5% per year since 1950.1 Between 1970 and 2004, global emissions increased 70%, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions alone increased by 80%.
