ABSTRACT

Today, the French animation industry is ranked third in the world and first in Europe, producing around 300 new hours of animation each year. French producers benefit from efficient governmental subsidies designed to support creativity in this industry. Partly due to this unique and enviable system, since the year 2000, French productions globally have received more than 50% of their budget from national sources. For example, in 2005, on average, 17% of the budget for an animation series came from French producers, 26% from the French TV channel which bought the series, 16% from governmental subsidies, 5% from ‘pre-selling’ to other French TV channels, 2 for a total of 64% of the budget.
