Extensive review of fifteen recordings, both live and studio, including multiple recordings by Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, and Cristina Deutekom. History of performance and vocal demands. Recommends Sutherland’s second Decca set as “indispensable” but notes that “Callas’s historic but flawed EMI set has complementary virtues.”
