ABSTRACT

The particularities of knowledge work Knowledge-based companies are key actors in advanced economies. They can be characterized as sharing knowledge rather than dividing labour. Wealth increasingly depends on the knowledge and competence of human agents: on their creative dealing with knowledge (i.e., on what companies are able to do), rather than on the capital employed (i.e., on what they own). The way knowledge is created and used in complex interaction processes of dividing and sharing knowledge is becoming the most powerful productive force and is crucial for performance or competitiveness (see also Chapter 6 in this volume).
