ABSTRACT

Introduction The purpose of this chapter is to explore change processes in Sustainable Work Systems (SWS) design, with an emphasis on learning mechanisms created within one of the world’s most successful health maintenance organizations, the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program (KPMCP) in Southern California. We will use the KPMCP case to demonstrate SWS values and principles and to show how learning mechanisms are used within SWS design programs. We will also pursue the implications for SWS design theory and the SWS redesign process.
