ABSTRACT
Religion and international relations theory have had a unique and interesting relationship. It is arguable that modern international relations, based on the interactions between Westphalian states, had its origin in religious conflict in that the peace of Westphalia was to a large extent motivated by the desire to end international wars over religion. Yet until recently international relations theory – likely at least in part due to the motivations behind the peace of Westphalia – has ignored religion.
