ABSTRACT

Dramatic increases in childhood obesity in Canada were observed several years ago (Tremblay andWillms, 2000) and have since been confirmed (Tremblay et al., 2002; Shields, 2006). Accurate measures of the physical activity (PA) level of Canadian childrenhave been lacking and suggest both increases (Eisenmann et al., 2004) and decreases (Tremblay et al., 2005) over time. In recent years Canada has received failing grades with respect to childhood PA and obesity (Active Healthy Kids Canada (AHKC), 2007). This issue is important and requires attention, adaptations and resources of all sectors. The purpose of this short review is to highlight ten initiatives in Canada in 2007 that demonstrate the breadth and depth of efforts directed towards this issue in Canada.
