ABSTRACT

Suicide raises many questions. There are philosophical and religious questions such as is it ever justified, and if so when? There are questions of management for those who run prisons and mental hospitals with concerns over the sort of precautions to be taken to prevent suicide attempts. Should we remove all possible pieces of clothing and anything else that could be used and put the person in a padded cell? Should this be done to anyone that threatens suicide or just to some? If the latter, then what are the criteria for the decision? How far can we trust a person not to attempt suicide? Does lack of trust increase the likelihood of attempts at suicide? What drugs can be given to prevent it? Should drugs be used at all?
