ABSTRACT

TH E T H E A T R E G R O U P Nós do Morro1 represents one of the most importantinitiatives in the field of artistic and social activity in Brazil’s marginalized communities today. Created in 1986, the group now counts on the participation of three hundred people including children, youths and adults who live in the ‘morro’ of Vidigal, in Rio de Janeiro. Over two decades, for the most part without financial support, Nós do Morro has entrenched itself within the heart of its home, Vidigal, and also gained recognition outside the community. Today the productions of The Actors’ Company of Nós do Morro are staged in principal theatres in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. In 2006 their staging of Shakespeare’s Two Gentlemen of Verona was presented in Stratford-on-Avon, England, at the invitation of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s ‘Complete Works’ Festival.
