ABSTRACT

Books are, without doubt, disappearing (Trushell, 2000). They are being replaced by hypertexts—texts that are only available through the use of a computer. Even schoolbooks are disappearing. The following example may be a good illustration. At the start of the 2006/2007 school year, all schoolbooks for secondary education in the Dutch town of Breda in the south of the Netherlands had been made accessible through the internet (some books were scanned into a computer, other books were made available in digital form by the publishers). This had already happened in many other places before and it will undoubtedly happen more in the future. This development might be perceived as a big relief for struggling readers who might no longer have to deal with books!
