ABSTRACT

I watched from across the room as my 2-year-old grandson Griffin carefully settled into his Grandfather's big leather chair with two toys. He placed one toy, a favorite stuffed, red Elmo character, at his side. He placed the other toy, a small, yellow plastic computer, on his outstretched legs. He opened the monitor of the hinged toy laptop and pretended to turn on the computer by saying, “Click! [pause] Bong!” (The sound of an Apple computer being turned on). Next, he moved his Elmo toy onto his lap, nestling it safely between his tummy and the computer keyboard. “Can you see it?” he whispered softly into Elmo's ear. “See up here?” He pointed to the opened computer screen before continuing his pretend conversation. “Let's do a story together. Would you like to see a little story with me?”
