ABSTRACT

The need for firm breast support, especially for larger breasted women, has been documented (Gehlsen and Albohm, 1980; Lorentzen and Lawson, 1987; Boschma et al., 1994; Mason et al., 1999). Breast pain is common during exercise. From a survey of 59 women, Lorentzen and Lawson (1987) reported that 56% had experienced sports-related breast pain. The majority of pain related to breast motion and occurred more frequently in larger-breasted women. A linear relationship between breast displacement and pain was reported by Mason et al. (1999). The use of a sports-bra was recommended by these authors, after they found a reduction in perceived breast pain when a sports-bra was worn. Excessive breast motion during physical activity not only causes discomfort, but embarrassment which may discourage females from participating in regular exercise (Shivitz, 2001). Therefore, a good sports-bra can help to increase confidence and consequently performance.
