ABSTRACT

If you have played in a children’s carnival band from the age of four until you are nine, you never forget how to ‘wine ya’ waist’ and you just know it is one of the ways you express joy and a sense of freedom. Then when you dance as a black teenager amongst white peers you tone it down, you do not express in quite the same way because you are conscious of feeling and being different, even if this difference remains unnamed between you and your friends.
