ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to shed light on a new and under-studied phenomenon in Russian society: the socio-economic and criminal roles that migrants and migration play in Russian metropolises. The analysis focuses on how economic factors of migration influence the creation and continuation of criminal elements within and around the migrant community and the criminal consequences of this situation. It describes the criminological elements within and around migrant communities, including how the presence of migrants, their sphere of activities, and other institutions connected with migration, such as migration facilitators, intermediaries, and businesses founded to attract migrants, affect the level of crime within metropolises.
