ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the use of behavior modification as a therapeutic tool for school-based mental health professionals. Since the inception of behavior modification interventions in the schools in the 1950s, these techniques have been heralded as a breakthrough in the successful treat-ment of students with behavior problems. Conceptually, the theory behind behavior modification is straightforward and this practical approach quickly gained popularity in schools. However, by the 1970s controversies with regard to its effectiveness emerged. In this regard, mental health pro-fessionals need a thorough understanding of these operant conditioning techniques to provide effective treatment.
