From Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth to Ella Baker and Daisy Bates to Shirley Chisholm, African-American women have always played a key role in the Black civil rights struggle, even if their eff orts were not acknowledged. While Black women have had to deal with being discriminated against on account of their race and their gender, they have found a way to make their voices heard in both Black and White patriarchal societies.
