Introduction

In 2008, Time magazine devoted its September 1 edition to coverage of the Democratic National Convention. Not surprisingly, Barack Obama’s picture graced the cover. Th e most interesting part of the cover, though, was the halfcover listing all of the special articles in the issue. One title jumped out: “…Th e Obama Eff ect: New Black Leaders.”
