ABSTRACT

Treating anxiety symptoms and disorders among service members returning from combat requires considerable understanding about the role that exposure to combat stress plays in the development of such problems. Exposure to a traumatic event such as combat is necessary, though not sufficient, for the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but such exposure can also cause a variety of other psychological difficulties, including depression and other anxiety disorders. The focus of this chapter is on the treatment of anxiety symptoms and disorders, and we discuss issues as they apply to a variety of disorders; however, the most salient of these for combat veterans are those that are specifically tied to traumatic events: PTSD and acute stress disorder (ASD) (APA, 1994).
