ABSTRACT

The military, like all cultures, has its own language, attire, social norms, and attitudes. Excellent overviews have been provided of the military culture and lifestyle and how these affect service members and their children (see, for example, Knox & Price, 1999, 2006). Stress, trauma, and loss are normative parts of the military culture and come in many forms via transitions, deployments, and permanent losses, as in the case of bereavement. This chapter describes how the military culture and military-related experiences affect family members, and what can be done to prevent, alleviate, and address the impact of these events on children.
