Educators and administrators in community colleges see students like José every day. Some of these students make it to their goal; others do not. e question is, how do educators help students like José to become engaged and to achieve academically in the community college setting in order to transfer to four-year institutions? When considering the needs of community college students, the rst challenge is dening these students. Students attending a community college have varying reasons for matriculating. Many see community college as a low-cost, open-access institution of higher education that provides the opportunity to obtain a variety of skills, including learning English as a second language, to earn a vocational certicate or associate of arts degree, and to transfer to a four-year college or university.
