ABSTRACT

In January 2009, the BBC 1 reported on the Davos World Economic Forum where a panel of experts discussed the threat of cybercrime and how it is rising sharply. The experts determined that there were a number of threats associated with the internet—threats that not only come from different components of the world wide web, but also threats that differentially target particular users and user groups. The first threat identified is the threat of crime. It was noted that internet crime threats are wide-ranging, from individual hackers who might attempt to steal identities or crash systems, to the more recent threat emerging from organized crime groups who have been able to control and redirect many millions of dollars:

in the United States, a “virtual” group had managed to hijack and redirect the details of 25 million credit card transactions to Ukraine. The group used the data to buy a large number of goods, which were then sold on eBay. 2
