ABSTRACT

The present contribution deals with the biographies and life circumstances of the so-called foreign experts, many of whom were of Jewish origin.1 Their

political attitudes were similar to those of many American and European

journalists at that time, as for example Theodore White (Thunder Out of

China) or Randall Gould (China in the Sun). Both ‘‘groups’’ – disgusted by

the plundering, general corruption and press manipulation of the Guo-

mindang officials in Chongqing, which occurred everywhere, and also

thanks to the persuasive power of the communists and a, in many regards,

manifestly better economic and political situation in the areas liberated by Mao’s troops – moved toward progressive ideas; the longer they were there,

the more so.
