Meek wrote her groundbreaking study in what may seem, in retrospect, to be the last moments when the book was unquestionably primary among reading primers. Even a very short time later, at least in the West, huge numbers of small children are comfortable with computer screens, cell phones and other digital apparatus. Has this development had any impact on the artifact of the picturebook itself? I suggest that one consequence is that the apparatus of the book itself is radically more visible to children of a very young age who are at home with contrasting formats.
