ABSTRACT

Evidence-based practice in psychology (EBPP) is an integrative approach in which practitioners actively and deliberately use scientic ndings to provide effective treatment to clients. It is embedded in health care marketplace concerns as well as the scientist-practitioner model that is foundational for counseling psychology (Chwalisz, 2003). The Society of Counseling Psychology (Division 17 of the American Psychological Association [APA]), other divisions, and the APA have developed approaches to EBPP that offer valuable guidance to researchers, educators, and practitioners about its implementation and implications. It is important for counseling psychologists to understand the meaning of EBPP, the ways in which it may be put to good use, how it relates to the values and principles of counseling psychology, and the different epistemologies on which it is based.
