ABSTRACT
This chapter reviews the historical development of science communication through science museums and science centres, over several centuries. It records how the development of scientific practice was embedded in, and grew from, the exhibition practices of the museum, and how changing concepts of the place of science in society are reflected in science museums and science centres. It shows how increased attention to communication through the science museum or science centre has eventually brought the visitors to centre stage.
