ABSTRACT

Many heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems have more capacity than is ever required to keep its occupants comfortable. Such ‘oversized’ systems can have negative effects on the environment and on occupant comfort, as well as on the economic outcomes for the building. This chapter describes the factors that lead to over-sizing and suggests measures to ensure that HVAC systems have sufficient but not excessive capacity – that is, are ‘right-sized’. This work is based on a research project funded by the CRC for Construction Innovation (Thomas and Moller 2007).
