ABSTRACT

Libraries have changed significantly over the last 20 years. Changes in the design and presentation of library facilities have matched changes in the information and communications technology environment. In the educational environment, teaching and learning practices have changed considerably. Library design in the educational environment has therefore reflected the changes in teaching and learning. Client behavior has also changed and library design and service delivery have responded to the new client needs that have become apparent. Various words have been used to describe the types of libraries that have emerged—learning resource centers, digital libraries, hybrid libraries, and e-libraries. At the University of Queensland, the term cybrary has been used to describe the combination of cyberspace and physical space in service delivery. The impact of changes in the information and communications technology environment, teaching and learning, and user behavior are outlined and the resulting model of service delivery and design is described.
