ABSTRACT
Vision is a fundamental aspect of human thinking and engagement with the world, and image documents comprise a genre crucial to the study of culture. Images, both moving and still, form a critical information element for the humanities, sciences, education, and the arts, and the amount of information recorded and communicated pictorially rather than textually has increased dramatically with the growth of the Web. 1
