This chapter focuses on German continuative relative clauses introduced by a wh-expression, which are accordingly called ‘wh-relatives.’ 2 A typical example of a wh-relative clause is given in(1):

Emma hat einen Schrank gekauft, was Oskar erstaunte.

Emma has a cupboard bought which Oskar astonished

‘Emma has bought a cupboard, which astonished Oskar.’
