This chapter aims to describe the essential function that needs to be provided through an ongoing and attentive involvement of the professional network around an adoptive family.

The psychological importance of the fi rst few months and years of life in the formation of personality and the establishing of emotional resilience is now better understood than ever before. The later in life that a child is adopted, the greater will have been the impact of their previous experiences on shaping personality and causing psychological problems that few ordinary couples are equipped to deal with.
