Little words matter. In the chapters that follow this one, you will find that the little words ‘of’, ‘for’ and ‘as’ are used to highlight particular kinds of relationships between ‘assessment’ and ‘learning’. The job of this chapter is to prepare the ground for these more detailed accounts by examining the links between assessment ‘and’ learning in general terms.
