ABSTRACT

At the foot of the mountains, lowland minorities live agricultural lives infl uenced by social modernization. ey have more complex cultures, combining elements from both the mountains and the plains. Most are integrated into their central governments. ey include the Mon and the Shan in Burma; the Lawa, the Plains Karen, and the Tai-lue in ailand; and the Black Tai and the Red Tai in Laos and Vietnam.
