ABSTRACT
Alice was four and a half when she was admitted to the general surgery specialty following an accident which required surgery to her bowel. She would stay in hospital for six months. Prior to this she had been a happy, popular little girl. She was bright and enjoyed all the pastimes expected of a child her age. Her parents had no medical concerns for their daughter and were looking forward to her leading a normal life.
