ABSTRACT

Th is dialogue took place as students in our summer seminar tried to make sense of how contrasting approaches to teaching and learning impact students at risk of dropping out of high school. Th e 2007 seminar represents the seventh time that Ernest Morrell and I have taught a course in sociology of education to Los Angeles youth. For the past few weeks our student research teams have traveled to schools across Los Angeles to talk with students and educators about why so many youth have become disengaged from their education and what can be done to foster engagement and academic success.
